Was born near Cologne, Germany. After studying dance and choreography at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Mark Morris engaged Joachim Schlömer as a dancer for the Théatre de la Monnaie in Brussels, and shortly after, he founded his own company JOSCH.

Within the following 10 years as ballet director in Ulm, Weimar and Basel he created more than 80 choreographic works for his own company and for other ensembles, such as Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, Singapore Dance Theatre, Provincial Dances Jekaterinenburg and Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project.

Since the end of the 90ies, Joachim Schlömer has not only been choreographing dance, but also directed and created opera and theatre productions dissolving more and more the borders between the different arts. That was the origin of pieces like la guerra d'amore at the Theater Basel which opened the Berliner Theatertreffen in May 2000 and his Artaud-Project die nervenwaage for the Burgtheater Wien.

Apart from his recent works created for and shown at Salzburger Festspiele, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Theater Basel, Luzerner Theater, Schauspielhaus Köln, Burgtheater Wien, Wiener Festwochen, Zellerbach Hall San Francisco/Berkley and other places, Joachim Schlömer wrote and directed two dance films: the platform and electric boy.

In 2004 Joachim Schlömer published together with A. T. Schaefer, of the NRW-Kulturstiftung and the Edition Braus a photographic documentation. Under the title of senza fine twelve of his productions are presented.

He lectures at universities and conferences on his work in theater, dance and opera as well as his films. He was a member of the jury at widely different choreographic competitions and allocations of scholarships. He is a guest professor at the University of Giessen (Institut für Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft) and since 2006 Curator of the Tanztheater Freiburg-Heidelberg/pvc.

For his work Joachim Schlömer was awarded the Otto-Kasten-Prize, the Förderpreis of German theatre directors and the German Critics’ Prize.
