Welcome to the homepage for A Clear View of Heaven – a multimedial popbaroque intervention! The song you are hearing right now is pop, but it's also a Baroque song, the famous Lamento of Dido by Henry Purcell from 1689, performed in this popbaroque version by our pop singer Ane Brun. That's what our project is about: a fascinating meeting of the Old and the New. Find out why the controversial restoration of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel is so interesting to us, or how the Matteis Project - Baroque ReImagined translates the violin music of mysterious Nicola Matteis into our times. There is also much music, in-depth thoughts by our director Joachim Schlömer, stills by filmmaker Bill Morrison and much more. Enjoy!
Michelangelo`s recently restored ceiling frescoes in the Sixtine Chapel and music by the Italian Baroque composer Nicola Matteis together form the starting point for A Clear View of Heaven. In a musical-theatrical space between Baroque and pop, between restoration and reImagination, existential questions appear. Where are we from? Is the reality of our lives constant? Can and should science take the magic out of myths?
(Programme booklet from Lucerne Festival 2007)
A Clear View of Heaven is a sound project under the direction of Joachim Schlömer; Etienne Abelin is the musical director. The video material with A Clear View of Heaven originates from New York filmmaker Bill Morrison. As special guest the Italian Baroque violinist Giuliano Carmignola appears. And also taking part are: Baroque singer Marisa Martins with Baroque songs by Claudio Monteverdi and Sigismondo D'India, the Norwegian pop singer Ane Brun with popbaroque songs by Henry Purcell, the actor Markus Merz, sound designer Michael Seberich and the dramaturgist Bettina Auer. The Matteis Project Ensemble – Baroque ReImagined performs Baroque and transbaroque interpretations of music by mysterious Italian Baroque composer and violinist Nicola Matteis – with Baroque and electrically amplified instruments.
Premiere: Saturday, 8th September 2007, Luzerner Saal within the Lucerne Festival 2007
